Was There A Worldwide Flood?

Worldwide Flood - Noah's Ark

God created a perfect world 6,000 years ago but man corrupted it when he sinned. About 4,400 years ago God judged their wickedness with a worldwide flood. God sent Noah two of every kind of land animal (not bugs or fish) and the entire world was destroyed with water. Only Noah's family and several thousand animals on the ark survived. One year after the flood started Noah and his family exited the ark that God used to save them.

What is the evidence of a worldwide flood? (Genesis 6-8)

Bent Sedimentary Layers

Bent Sedimentary RockBent sedimentary rock layers in the Grand Canyon.

All the rock layers at the Kiabab Plateau have been uplifted by tectonic activity. Sedimentary rock does not bend, it breaks; however, at the Kiabab Uplift, all the layers including the Kaibab Limestone, Redwall Limestone, and Tapeats Sandstone have all bent without fractures. This could only have happened if all 4,000 feet of sediment was deposited very rapidly and then bent while it was still soft and pliable. This could not happen if the layers were vastly different ages.

Vast Strata Formation

Vast Strata FormationThe Tapeats Sandstone crosses North America, southern Israel and Egypt.

Some of the layers exposed in the Grand Canyon are just part of a large formation that cover entire continents. The Tapeats Sandstone crosses North America, southern Israel and Egypt. The Redwall Limestone is found in Nevada, Wyoming, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, England, and the Himalayas. To form these layers the oceans would have to completely cover the continents many times. The only way the strata could have formed is if the entire world was under water at the same time.

Sand Transported Across Continents

Each layer of sediment in the Grand Canyon is made of a very different type of sand grain. This indicates the sediment originated from different locations. Based on the water current indicators in the sedimentary layers it is concluded that the Coconino Sandstone quartz was transported from northern Utah or Wyoming and the Navajo Sandstone came from as far as the Appalachians of Pennsylvania.

Rapid Canyon Formation

Rapid Canyon FormationThe Grand Canyon formed with a lot of water in a short period of time.

The Colorado River could not have carved the Grand Canyon because rivers do not flow uphill. The river enters the canyon over 4,000 feet below the rim and could not have started the erosion with a little water over a long period of time. Before the canyon formed, a large lake existed that was 3 times the volume of Lake Michigan (3,000 cu. mi.). Erosion from the shore line of this lake can be seen today by Bryce canyon. When the lake overflowed the plateau, it rapidly formed the Grand Canyon with a lot of water in a short period of time.

Mt. St. Helens

The eruption of Mt. St. Helens was relatively small but still moved about two-thirds of a cubic mile of sediment. The eruption showed that many layers of sediment can be deposited very rapidly to a depth of 400 feet when it was previously thought that it took long periods of time to form many layers. Mud flows after the eruption formed a canyon that is an 140 feet deep, one-fortieth scale model of the Grand Canyon. The mudslides also created a floating log mat on Spirit Lake. These trees slowly sank to the bottom standing upright and have started to be deposited in sediment in only a few years. This type of burial is consistent with the polystrate fossils and trees seen extending through supposedly thousands, or millions of years of layers. If a minor catastrophe can create large geologic features than it is reasonable to conclude a world wide flood could easily create the massive sedimentation, erosion, and uplift seen from the Grand Staircase to the Grand Canyon.

Massive Erosion

The southwest United States is made up of sedimentary layers that are over 10,000 feet thick in Brian Head, UT and decrease to only 4,000 feet thick at the Grand Canyon. This formation is known as the Grand Staircase. The Grand Canyon is impressive at a depth of 4,000 feet, but there are thousands of feet of missing strata above the top of the canyon. Remnants of these strata are seen in Red Butte and Cedar Butte. Over 100,000 cubic miles of missing sediment and no delta is a testimony to a massive amount of erosion in the worldwide flood.

The Grand StaircaseThe Grand Staircase - The Grand Canyon is impressive at a depth of 4,000 feet, but there are thousands of feet of missing strata above the top of the canyon.

Every time you see a rainbow (Genesis 9:13) remember God promises never to judge the world with a flood again, but He does promise to return and judge the world for their sins. Put your trust in our God and Creator, Jesus Christ, because only He can save you from your sins.

2 Peter 3:5-7

For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
